Law & Order - Season 14 (2003 – 2004)

The fourteenth season of Law & Order was notable for being the final season for actor Jerry Orbach, who had portrayed Detective Lennie Briscoe for 11 seasons. Briscoe retired from the NYPD in the season finale, where he entertained the idea of working as an investigator for the District Attorney's office if he was bored, setting him up for his move to Law & Order: Trial by Jury. The move allowed Orbach to continue playing Briscoe, but with a lighter workload. Unfortunately, he was only able complete two episodes of Trial By Jury before passing away from prostate cancer later that year. Briscoe passed away in the Law & Order universe as well, with all three of his former partners acknowledging his passing onscreen, Mike Logan in an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Ed Green in his final episode in Season 18, and Rey Curtis when Benjamin Bratt returned for a guest appearance in the show's final season in 2009.

Season 14 also marked only the second time that the series did not undergo any major cast changes for two successive seasons. In the season's 19th episode "Nowhere Man", New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, like his predecessor Rudolf Guiliani, made an appearance as himself.

The following weapons were used in Season 14 of the television series Law & Order:

Revolvers

Smith & Wesson Model 36

For the majority of the series, Detective Lennie Brisco (Jerry Orbach) carries a Smith & Wesson Model 36 revolver. Despite the NYPD having officially switched to automatic pistols on January 1st, 1994, more senior officers like Briscoe were grandfathered in and allowed to continue carrying revolvers.

Special Agent Jamal Atkinson (Lance Reddick) hands over a suspect's S&W 36 in "City Hall" (S14E14). He refers to it as a "Colt .38 Revolver," but close examination reveals the Smith & Wesson-style cylinder latch. Note the square butt.
Special Agent Atkinson handles the suspect's S&W 36 while on the stand in "City Hall" (S14E14). He eventually hands it back to EADA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston). Note the five shots, and the ejector rod shroud.

Det. Briscoe takes a S&W 36 off of Carmine "Bumpy" Bustalein (Bo Dietl) in "Everybody Loves Raimondo's" (S14E20).

Goof

In the teaser of "Patient Zero" (S14E03), a gunshot is heard offscreen, and then the camera swings around to a carjacker dropping a driver on the ground. It's later revealed that the driver is dead with a single gunshot wound to the chest, and a matching ".38" found in the driver's possession.

So where's the gun? Both hands are seen, but the gun is not seen in either hand.

Pistols

Glock 19

Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) and other NYPD officers are armed with Glock 19 pistols.

Beretta 92FS

Ballistics tech Evan Underberg (Peter Smith) handles a Beretta 92FS in "Embedded" (S14E08). It is referred to as a military issue M9. This episode mistakenly states that all soldiers are issued sidearms, although in this case, both Sgts. George Meacham (Keith Nobbs} and Dixon Hawes (never seen onscreen) might've been issued pistols as NCOs. This episode also shows soldiers being able to take their weapons back from combat zones, which would not be permitted in real life.

Smith & Wesson 61 Escort

The murder weapon in "Gaijin" (S14E22) is a nickel-plated Smith & Wesson 61 Escort. It is correctly desribed as a "Smith & Wesson .22."
