Hostiles is a 2017 Western movie directed by Scott Cooper (Black Mass) and starring Christian Bale as Captain Joseph Blocker, a legendary veteran of the Civil War who is ordered by the Army to escort Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi), an aging Cheyenne war chief, back to his homeland in Montana due to his terminal illness. Along the way, they take along Rosalee Quaid (Rosamund Pike), whose family was massacred by Comanches.

Single Action Army "Cavalry" Model

Single Action Army "Cavalry" model revolvers are the sidearms of many US Army cavalrymen, notably Captain Joseph J. Blocker (Christian Bale), Lt. Rudy Kidder (Jesse Plemons), Master Sgt. Thomas Metz (Rory Cochrane), and Cpl. Henry Woodson (Jonathan Majors). In one scene, Rosalee Quaid (Rosamund Pike) is seen with a "Cavalry" revolver, taken from a killed Comanche warrior (she also holds a revolver on the movie poster). "Cavalry" revolvers are also used by landowner Cyrus Lounde (Scott Wilson), one of his sons Silas Lounde (Brian Duffy), and by Comanche war chief Buffalo Man (David Midthunder) and Yellow Hawk's son Black Hawk (Adam Beach).

Due to a continuity error, Muny's (Scott Anderson) Winchester Model 1886 switches to a Winchester Model 1873 Long Rifle for a moment. It may also be a (Winchester Model 1876 "Sporting", but the top of the receiver looks more like a Model 1873).

Winchester 1873 "Long Range"

Muny aims a Winchester 1873 Long Rifle. The receiver is quite different from the Winchester 1886 rifle that the character holds on screenshots above.

The barrel is seen better.

The rifle is seen from another side. In the next moment, Muny is again seen with a Winchester 1886.

Sharps 1859 Carbine

Cpl. Henry Woodson (Jonathan Majors) carries a Sharps 1859 Carbine in a saddle holster. In reality, the Sharps 1859 was phased out in 1864 while the film is set in 1892. The later Sharps 1874, or even more appropriately, the Sharps 1874 Cavalry Carbine, would have been a better choice.

Spencer 1860 Carbine

Several US cavalrymen are armed with Spencer 1860 Carbines, notably Lt. Rudy Kidder (Jesse Plemons), Sgt. Paul Malloy (Ryan Bingham), and Cpl. Molinor (Stafford Douglas). Unlike Sharps carbines, Spencer carbines were still in use in the late 19th century.

Sentries in Fort Berringer, New Mexico hold Trapdoor carbines. The Trapdoor breech and the saddle ring of the carbine at the left are seen quite well.

Several of the cavalrymen in formation hold Trapdoor carbines. They differ from Spencers by the fully wooden handguard and more rounded trigger guard.

Trivia

Two 12 pounder M1841 mountain howitzers are seen in Fort Winslow, Colorado. These artillery pieces were phased out in mid-1860s and replaced with 1.65-inch M1875 mountain guns.
