The Colt M16A1 is seen with American military forces in the Vietnam War flashbacks and seen in the OP sequence. They're sometimes seen in archive footage with law enforcement forces in the United States.

Corporal Travis Hunter (Darren Mann) and Private First Class Daniel Studimeir evade gunfire from an ambush in Cam Lo, Quảng Trị, South Vietnam in "Fortunate Son".

Corporal Hunter opens fire at a suspected enemy soldier. This fatally sets off the events of the show.
