Rifles

M1 Carbine

Several of the US Marines who meet the astronauts on the beach are armed with the M1 Carbine.

Three Marines with M1 Carbines run on the beach.
The Marine in the center has an M1 Carbine.

Fake M14 Rifles

Several of the US Marines who meet the astronauts on the beach are also armed with faux M14 rifles, which were built up from stock M1 Garand rifles, with an M14-style flash hider added, a fake box magazine and the addition of a faux M14 top handguard on top of the Garand wooden handguard. As a trivia note: the Marines are all dressed anachronistically. They wear the Pacific theater helmet cover from WWII (worn in many cases up to the 1960s), Khaki M23 ten pocket ammo belts (for a Garand) OG-107 utilities without the eagle globe & anchor on the left pocket.

The fake M14 flash hider is readily visible here as Marines stand guard as the apes exit the vehicle. Note that the helmet covers for these Marines are actually World War II vintage.
Marines in the background carry the rifle.
