Enfield EM-2 - .280 British

The Enfield EM-2, also known by the codename "Mamba" during development, was a prototype British rifle chambered in the intermediate .280 British round. Development of the weapon began in 1948, and in April 1951 a production variant was ready and the rifle was provisionally adopted as the No. 9 Mk 1. However, there was division within NATO about what round should become standard, with the USA strongly favouring the 7.62x51mm. When a new Conservative government under Winston Churchill was elected in October 1951, it was felt that standardisation within NATO was more important than the qualities of the round itself, so it was decided that a rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm rather than the .280 British would be adopted. Attempts were mode to convert the EM-2 to this new round (along with several other experimental "compromise" rounds), but ultimately they were unsuccessful with a modified, semi-auto only version of the FN FAL, the L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR), being adopted in its place.
