Day of the Dead (2008)

Day of the Dead is the 2008 quasi-remake of the 1985 horror film of the same name, however, it veered drastically from the original movie, despite maintaining some of the elements, situations and characters. The original Sarah Bowman of the 1985 film (Lori Cardille) is instead replaced by Mena Suvari as Army Corporal Sarah Cross, who is assigned to a military lock down of an 'infected town' in Colorado. There is no apocalyptic zombie plague like in the original, in fact this is not even part of the Dead series, in that no one yet knows of the living dead, and the way they become infected is completely different. In this incarnation, it is a military developed airborne virus designed to paralyze enemy soldiers for 6-8 hours and had mutated into killing people with 'flu like symptoms' and turning them into amped up zombies who can climb the ceiling and run like mad.

In somewhat of a disappointment to fans of Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, actor Ving Rhames is featured in the cast of this film as a completely different character than the one portrayed in the 2004 film. Instead of the heroic police officer Kenneth, Rhames plays an unsympathetic Army Captain, a nod to the Captain Rhodes (Joe Pilato) of the first movie, thus any fan, curious to see if Kenneth or anyone else from that film actually survived, was in for a crushing let down. The film was released direct to DVD (as is usual for low budgeted films shot in Bulgaria) in April 2008.

The following weapons were used in the film Day of the Dead (2008):

Pistols

Beretta 92FS

Beretta 92FS pistols are used by Captain Rhodes (Ving Rhames), Salazar (Nick Cannon) and Corporal Sarah Cross (Mena Suvari). Note: Sarah Cross is called "Corporal Cross" by Captain Rhodes and the nametape "Cross" is on her uniform, but in the credits she is listed as "Sarah Bowman". Strangely, every time they are fired, the Beretta's sound like they have silencers on them.

For some unknown reason Corporal Sarah Cross (Mena Suvari) keeps her duty M9 unloaded which is ridiculous for a soldier in a 'hot zone'.
Captain Rhodes (Ving Rhames) tries to fight off the zombies with his Beretta 92FS/M9
Corporal Sarah Cross (Mena Suvari) finally loads up and fires her Beretta 92FS/M9
Bud (Stark Sands), the friendly Zombie Soldier, realizes his M9 is empty.
Salazar (Nick Cannon) holds an Inox and a 92FS in the tunnels, guns he liberated from a gun store.

Beretta 92FS Inox

A Beretta 92FS Inox is liberated from the gun shop and used by Salazar (Nick Cannon) and Corporal Sarah Cross (Mena Suvari).

Revolvers

Smith & Wesson Model 19

A Smith & Wesson Model 19 is liberated from the gun shop and given to Trevor, Corporal Sarah Cross's brother.

Smith & Wesson Model 36

Nina (AnnaLynne McCord) has a Smith & Wesson Model 36 with nickel finish and pachmayr grips tucked in the back of her jeans which wiggles when she walks, prompting her boyfriend Trevor to mention how 'hot' she looks packing heat. Because of the filming location, it's possible that this is a replica.

Submachine Guns

IMI Micro Uzi

A Micro Uzi is used by Salazar (Nick Cannon).

When Cross fires, the Uzi changes to this weird submachine gun with unusual muzzle nut. It could be yet another 'disguised' Bulgarian gun mocked up to look like an Uzi.

Shotguns

Mossberg 500 Cruiser

Mossberg 500 Cruisers are liberated from the gun shop. One has a ribbed short barrel, while the other is a standard Cruiser with plain barrel. Both shotguns have pistol grips. Used by Salazar (Nick Cannon) and Trevor (Michael Welch).

Assault Rifles

AK-47

Fake M16A2

Built up from AK-type rifles, these fake M16s are seen in many low budget sci-fi/horror movies that are filmed in Eastern Europe, in this case, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Visible is the AK rear sight, with the rest of the rifle completely disguised under an aluminum imitation shell.
Visible is the extended magazine well, which holds a 10 round curved AK magazine.
Zombie soldiers attack, firing their fake M16 rifles. Zombies that shoot at us? That's just wrong....
More Zombie soldiers charge the fleeing Humvee, firing their rifles rather ineffectively.

Other

Gun Store

There are many bolt action rifles, shotguns and pistols in this store. According to the scriptwriters, it's easy to walk out of a gun shop in "Colorado" with fully automatic machine guns and rocket launchers. Apparently the screenwriters don't know much about gun stores in America.

Trivia Special

Weird American BDU uniforms

Being that this movie was filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria, the filmmakers used Eastern European BDU uniforms which closely resemble American ones but the color scheme and cut is slightly different. By this time, however, the US Army had almost entirely switched to the Army Combat Uniform in the Universal Camouflage Pattern, thus making BDUs anachronistic.

Captain Rhodes (Ving Rhames) wears a strangely colored Woodland "BDU" uniform. Also the 'American soldiers' wear ultra dark chocolate brown t-shirts which is not correct.
Salazar (Nick Cannon) walks with some unusual looking "name tapes".
Corporal Sarah Cross (Mena Suvari) does have rank insignia, but they are non-standard for Modern U.S. Army.
