Chiwetel Ejiofor is an English actor of Nigerian descent who is frequently cast in roles that require an American accent, including such films as Salt (2010), Inside Man and American Gangster, but sometimes gets to use his native British accent, as he did in the gun-heavy science fiction film Serenity as the Alliance commander known only as "The Operative" (however he used only a sword in that film). In 2013, he gained widespread acclaim for his role as Solomon Northup in the film 12 Years a Slave.
