The series depicts the history of Soviet Ugolovny Rozysk (criminal police) from 1917 to 1970s, seen through the eyes of Nikolay Fomich Kondratyev (Evgeniy Zharikov).

The final, ninth/tenth (two-part) film The Last Meeting (Poslednyaya vstrecha) is set many years after the pervious one, in 1970s. Nikolay Kondratyev is a general of Militsia. His son Aleksey, who is also Ugolovny Rozysk detective, investigates a robbery. The investigation leads him to the trace of the murder of Maria Kondratyeva in 1948.
