Ryan Gosling stars in the film as Officer K, a new Blade Runner investigating an unusual discovery following the "retirement" of an older replicant. Harrison Ford reprises his role as Rick Deckard, the former Blade Runner, who could be the key to K's investigation. The cast also includes Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Lennie James, and Dave Bautista.

K (Ryan Gosling) also uses his own Blade Runner handgun similar to Deckard's in the film. This blaster is first used by K to threaten Sapper (Dave Bautista). According to an interview with Prop Master Doug Harlocker by Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame), there is no real gun inside the 2049 version as attempting to put a functional revolver inside the weapon made it appear too "fat," and firing effects from the gun are CG only. The "hero" prop does "cycle" using an electromagnet linked to the trigger that makes a block at the rear move forward, and has a single LED on the front of the trigger guard.
