The film the first American film for Marion Cotillard as well as the feature film debut of Miley Cyrus, who played a small role and was still known by her birth name "Destiny Cyrus." The film was based on Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. Longtime Burton collaborator Danny Elfman was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Grammy for his score, but ultimately did not win either.
