While praised by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the Russian Defense Ministry chose not to adopt the AK-12 due to millions of AK-74 rifles still in stockpile. However this changed in 2015, and the AK-12 is now slowly being introduced into Russian military service, with the intent of eventually phasing out the AK-74M.
